May's Tiger Trait is Creativity

Creativity for elementary school kids isn't just about art; it's the ability to think in new and original ways to solve problems or express themselves. It’s a core skill that helps children navigate the world, build confidence, and develop critical thinking.

Creativity in this age group manifests in diverse, everyday actions:

  • Problem-solving: When a child uses a cardboard box to build a fort, a rocket ship, or a car, they are using their imagination to find new uses for a common object. This is a form of creative problem-solving.

  • Storytelling: Inventing new characters for a story, creating an alternative ending to a book, or making up a play with friends all show creative expression.

  • Play: Unstructured free play is a huge driver of creativity. Building with Legos without instructions, making a new game with household objects, or using sticks and leaves to build a fairy house are all examples.

  • Academic Work: Creativity in the classroom isn't limited to art class. It's evident when a student finds a unique way to solve a math problem, writes a poem from the perspective of an animal, or presents a book report as a short video instead of a written paper.
